Author Chuck Klosterman wrote “Former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Roger Staubach is my hero; this is because whoever is your hero when you’re nine remains your hero forever.”
That is unless your ‘hero’ defects to the WFL I guess.
This is Larry “Zonk” Csonka, star fullback for the Miami Dolphins, my favorite player from my favorite football team when I was a kid. This particular action shot was by Sports illustrated photographer Walter Iooss Jr. and was taken during Superbowl VII; wherein my Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 to earn their first of two consecutive titles.
Two years later, following the Dolphins shocking defeat in the infamous “Sea of Hands” playoff game December 22, 1974 (if you have a weak stomach, you may want to skip the last few minutes); I left the TV and calmly went to my bedroom where I preceeded to pull this poster off the wall and ripped it into a million pieces.
I didn’t do this because they lost, I did it because I lost my hero. It was announced before the game that the Zonk and two other teammates had signed lucrative contracts to play the following year in the newly formed rival World Football League. So this was his last game in a Dolphin uniform.
He was leaving the team for money.
I recently bought this poster online after searching for it for years; not because my inner 9-year old forgives him (because he doesn’t). Rather, of the hundreds of posters I have collected (and designed) since, I have spent the most time staring at this one.
And I ask you, would you want to get in this man’s way?

A crappy poster I took off of a wooden telephone pole in Seattle in late ‘90’s. The damage is from sap released from the wood by the staples that held the poster in place.
