This poster was part of a strange paper promotion by Fox River Paper, Illustrated by Charles Burns, designed by Sharon Werner while she was still at Duffy Design in Minneapolis, 1989. This thing is an orgy of printing techniques—embossing, foil stamping and a die-cut edge—implemented to show how the paper would print under an extremely unlikely set of circumstances.
There was a whole back story behind the scene depicted here, that if memory serves was expanded upon in various other promotional materials; all Involving a graphic designer from the 40’s traveling through time.
I note with some interest the description of the graphic designer from the future. It reads: “2040’s graphic designer Lola Smith didn’t lose her creativity, it was taken from her.”
